Shaving Irritation and Rashes

Anyone who shaves may experience razor burn, especially those with sensitive or acne-prone skin. Razor burn appears shortly after shaving, lasts for two to three days and looks like a blotchy or streaky rash that may have small bumps. Note that razor burn differs from razor bumps, which occur when hair grows back after shaving and curls underneath the skin, creating ingrown hairs. Razor bumps look like acne or raised bumps.

If you often experience razor burn and are trying to figure out how to help a shaving rash, the Rendon Center offers some helpful tips to use before, during and after shaving.

How to Avoid Shaving Rash

Increase your chances of avoiding a shaving rash by following these hair removal best practices:

  • Exfoliate your skin: Before shaving, prepare your skin by exfoliating it to remove dead skin cells and soften the skin.
  • Don’t use an old razor: If your razor has dulled over time, switch it out for a new one. An old, dull razor can irritate your skin and provide a less effective shave, causing you to go over the same area multiple times.
  • Use shaving gel or cream: Don’t dry shave — ensure you have a gel, soap or cream on hand for a smooth glide that won’t pull at your skin.
  • Shave in the right direction: Shave in the direction that your hair grows instead of going against the grain.

How to Get Rid of Irritation and Bumps From Shaving

If you’re already dealing with razor burn, these tips can help you treat the affected area for better healing:

  • Use a cold compress: A cold compress can calm the irritation and inflammation from razor burn.
  • Apply an emollient: Use aloe if you’re experiencing pain or burning. Fragrance-free lotions and moisturizers can also ease irritated and dry skin.
  • Try OTC treatments: Additional ways to treat inflammation and get rid of bumps include over-the-counter products like oatmeal creams, diluted tea tree oil and witch hazel.
  • Avoid shaving the area: Let the area rest and heal for a few days before shaving it again to prevent further irritation.
