What is Radiesse?
Radiesse is a popular dermal filler made of calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) gel microspheres. CaHa is a mixture of ions of calcium and phosphate. Both substances are present in the body naturally, making Radiesse highly biocompatible. Initially, upon injections, the gel microspheres in Radiesse fill out the skin with volume and structure that mimics connective tissue. Over time, the ions of calcium and phosphate stimulate the increased production of collagen, the protein that works somewhat like a natural filler in the dermis. The effects of injections occur immediately and also continue to improve for several days. Results can last well over a year.

One of the unique characteristics of Radiesse is its firmer viscosity. It is more structural than many other dermal fillers due to the consistency of the gel microspheres. Who Is a Good Candidate for Radiesse?
CaHa, the active ingredient in Radiesse, has been extensively researched through multiple clinical trials and is proven safe for use in the skin. Adults over the age of 21 who are interested in reducing certain wrinkles and restoring youthful contours to the lower face are usually very good candidates for this soft tissue filler. Before recommending Radiesse, we perform a thorough consultation and medical history review with each patient. Radiesse is not suitable for women who are pregnant or nursing, for patients with an active skin infection, nor for people with a history of dermal allergies or allergies to medications, including lidocaine or other local anesthetics. In instances where Radiesse may not be the best choice, we do our best to find suitable alternatives.
How Long Does a Radiesse Treatment Take?
Radiesse treatment does not take long. After the consultation and decision that Radiesse is the ideal solution, the provider can immediately administer treatment. To begin, we will apply an antiseptic to the treatment area. Local anesthetic is not necessary because Radiesse contains lidocaine, which diminishes the sensations of the tiny needle. The entire appointment may take 30 minutes or less, after which patients may go about their day as usual.
How Many Radiesse Treatments Will I Need?
The Radiesse soft tissue filler provides immediate results. Before leaving the office, patients can confirm that they have achieved the outcome they had expected. The rejuvenating effects of Radiesse may improve somewhat over the course of a few weeks as collagen production increases. While the gel microspheres will gradually break down, the results of Radiesse generally last 12 to 18 months. Patients may choose to schedule a touch-up treatment before that time to boost their natural collagen production and subtly enhance the volume in their skin.
Are There Any Side Effects of Radiesse?
Radiesse has very few risks for complications. Patients can resume most normal activities upon leaving the office. Minor restrictions that we recommend include minimizing the use of saunas or exposure to excessive heat and sun. Patients should avoid massaging and touching the treatment area so as not to disrupt the integration of the gel microspheres into the dermis. To avoid product migration and unnecessary swelling or bruising, patients should postpone exercise until the following day. The most common side effects associated with Radiesse injections include minor swelling and redness. Additional side effects that may occur include:
- Tenderness or soreness at injection sites
- Itching
- Bruising
On the backs of the hands, patients might experience:
- Nodules or lumps, which should resolve naturally
- Change in skin sensation
- Temporary limitations in normal hand movement
All side effects noted in clinical studies and by previous patients are usually mild and do not interfere with day-to-day activities. Intervention is typically not necessary for side effects to resolve.
