The Ultimate Sclerotherapy Recovery Guide

Varicose veins can cause cosmetic concerns in addition to pain and discomfort. Sclerotherapy can help improve their appearance as well as their symptoms. If you are considering this type of treatment, this guide will help you know what to expect during your recovery and help you decide whether sclerotherapy is right for you.

Should I Walk After Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy does not require a lengthy recovery period, and it is best to start walking around soon after your treatment. You’ll likely be able to resume your regular activities on the same day.

Will I Experience Bruising After Vein Injections?

Yes, some bruising is entirely normal following sclerotherapy. If bruising does not diminish within a week of treatment, contact your doctor.

Should I Elevate My Legs After Sclerotherapy?

Immediately following sclerotherapy, elevate your legs above your heart for at least half an hour to reduce swelling. It can aid the healing process to continue this practice daily until your legs have healed.

When Can I Start Working Out After Sclerotherapy?

You can walk shortly after your procedure, as it is recommended that you do so. However, your doctor may recommend waiting a couple of weeks before doing any strenuous exercise.

Can I Take a Shower After Sclerotherapy?

You can remove your compressions after two days and take a shower after that. Your shower should be on the cooler side.

How Long Does It Take for Varicose Veins to Disappear After Sclerotherapy?

Smaller veins typically disappear sooner than larger ones. Spider veins will disappear in around three to six weeks, while larger veins will respond in about three to four months. Your varicose veins won’t reappear if they respond to the treatment.

Do Veins Grow Back After Removal?

Veins that are treated will disappear, but you may develop new veins over time. But if existing veins respond to treatment, they won’t grow back.

Will Varicose Veins Go Away With Weight Loss?

If you lose weight, this won’t make the varicose veins you already have disappear. It may help them to not get any worse, but it could actually make their appearance more noticeable. While losing weight is great for your overall health, you may want to have sclerotherapy to treat any varicose veins before starting your diet and exercise plan.

What Should I Know About Sclerotherapy Recovery?

One way to enhance the success of your treatment is to wear your compression stockings as directed. In general, it’s best to wear them 24 hours straight following your treatment, then only remove them at night for the next seven to 10 days. Other things you can do to achieve the results you’re looking for include:

  • Walking, moving around and completing light tasks that keep you active.
  • Avoiding rigorous and strenuous exercise and activities.
  • Avoiding baths, saunas, steam rooms and similar wet environments until you are totally healed.
  • Avoiding direct sun exposure, covering yourself and using sunscreen as needed.

When Should I Contact My Doctor About Complications?

While sclerotherapy usually does not bring serious complications, if you experience any of the following, contact your doctor immediately:

  • Significant swelling or inflammation
  • Extensive bruising
  • Signs of infection (discharge, fever, nausea)
  • Increased leg temperature or pain

Also, be sure to attend all follow-up appointments to ensure you catch any concerns early and ask any questions you may have about your recovery.
